Rain, crowds flow at annual fundraiser

Organizers of the 27th Hospice Cup Regatta reported raising more than $350,000 for participating area hospices last weekend in Annapolis, despite persistent, heavy rain that canceled sailing competition for more than 80 sailboats and 360 sailors. More than 350 donors, caregivers, hospice volunteers and sailors attended the regatta's fundraising party at Atria Manresa on Sept. 27 after racing was canceled earlier in the day.

"Just like life, the organizers and volunteers of the Hospice Cup XXVII overcame many challenges - from dealing with rain and mud and finding straw for the ground and additional parking in time for the event - to ensure all ran smoothly," said Karma O'Neill, executive director of Hospice Cup, Inc.

The Hank Lawton Trophy for Top Crew Fundraising, sponsored by Hospice of the Chesapeake, was presented to Angelo Guarino of Severna Park and aboard Bella Donna who raised more than $6,000. Hospice Cup funds help to pay expenses not covered by Medicare or private insurance. Participating hospices include Hospice of the Chesapeake in Annapolis and hospices in Prince George's and Montgomery counties, Washington and northern Virginia.
